President of the United States Barack ‘Hussein’ Obama seems to continue trying to demonstrate its seriousness to improve relations with the Islamic world.
His latest "maneuver" is refusing to link the terror group with radical Islam. He revised the policy of the U.S. government which has always been to link terrorism with Islam and /or mention the terror group by the term "radical Islam" -- just because members of these terror groups are Muslims.
In an interview quoted by FOX News (14 / 7), Obama even mention Islam as "a great religion”. He asserted, the majority Muslims against terrorism. "I think the vast majority of people of the Islamic faith reject that ...," he said.
Obama did the right thing. As a person who once lived in the world's largest Muslim country (Indonesia) and comes from a family of Islamic adherents in Kenya, of course, he (should) know, Islam is absolutely different from the Muslims. Even if there are Muslim who has "radical" ideology, then the appropriate term is "radical Muslims", not "radical Islam".
Inability to distinguish between "Islam" and "Muslim" is one source of Islamophobia. An action or a group of Muslims, not identical with the teachings of Islam.
A term is very important, especially for imaging in the media and public opinion formation. I've written a book about that issue in 2000, entitled Islamic Demonology: Western Efforts to Eradicate Islamic Strength. I discuss how the media and officials Western "successful" dropped the image of Islam, eradicate Islamic forces, and continue “to attack Islam and Muslims” with exposure to such terms as "Islamic fundamentalists", "militant Islam,"Islamic extremists ", "Islamic bomb ", and "radical Islam".
Radical Islam is one of several terms of media and officials of Western countries to refer to organizations or groups consisted of Muslims who (a) perform acts of violence, (b) calling for resistance against the hegemony of Western countries, and (c) called for the implementation of Sharia law.
That way, the Western media seems to try to “drown” the Islamic image as a religion of peace, religion of rahmatan lil 'alamin, and the best way of life for mankind; also tried to make the world fight against Islam or just fear of Islam.
The results, Europeans nowadays felt frightened by the symbols of Islam so that they government prohibits the hijab, the veil, even past the minarets in Switzerland --Daniel Streich, a leading anti-Islamic politicians from the Swiss People's Party (SVP), even converted to Islam after he is well aware of Islam. In America today, a number of mosque building plan opposed by many people around.
By language, radical means "root", "base", or "source/origin". The word radical means root (radicalism.us). Arising from or going to a root or source; Basic (thefreedictionary.com). Thus, every Muslim shall be a radical --obey the basis and source of Islamic religious teachings, namely the Qur'an and as-Sunnah. (Zonaislam’s Editorial Views).*

I am sure, people who hate Islam and Muslims do not understand Islam correctly. Hatred and hostility towards Islam and Muslims are generally caused by ignorance and misunderstanding about Islam.
